"Sticks and stones will break my bones
But words will never harm me."
Possibly 1862, maybe earlier.
One of the great lies of the English nursery. Words are what make it possible for people to harm others: they set up legitimate targets, dehumanise the target, and ultimately excuse the attacker.
From my comment there:
My version from experience:
Sticks and stones may break my bones
but they will heal and mend in time.
Words will wound and hurt my psyche
and ever do damage as my memory lasts.
ETA: From another comment thread there, the mouseover text on this xkcd comic is
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can make me think I deserved it."
