Livejournal's latest news post contained news about new shiny features that they have just made live. With no warning. Without asking the userbase (let alone the paid and permanent users) what we thought about these new shiny features.

At time of writing there have been 8140 comments, mostly saying NO to the ability for a user to link their LJ to their facebook (and twitter) and thenceforth crosspost their posts and comments to those sites. Even if the comment they are crossposting is in someone elses friends-locked journal post. Even if that other user has NOT connected their LJ to FB. We do not have the (logically required) ability to tick a box to say that we do not want anyone to link to our LJ in any way from FB.

As I mainly post publicly these days I am already censoring myself before posting to LJ. I use it like a public blog. That said, I would prefer that something I posted that I had locked to a friends-group did not make it out into the wild / public where, potentially, the people I had prevented from seeing my post by not adding them to that friends-group could read the comment.

Then again, anyone can and might copy/paste from any friends-locked post to facebook or Twitter anyway. So, as already said elsewhere, nothing on the internet/email is safe, even LJ f-locked posts.

My take on all of this? I used to link to my FB so that my public posts here were copied over there. I am not linking there any more. I would prefer that you do not crosspost comments to FB or TW when you comment on any of my locked posts. I will not be crossposting anything, myself because my LJ is not linked to my FB or TW, except in that I post from TW to LJ.

For reference, some more links:
LJ staff member links to a poll in the comments to the original post. They do not add it to the post or make a new post and so many people won't have seen it.
That poll.
Another relevant poll.
hiding the facebook and twitter buttons on your journal
They are unlikely to be able to undo this change as the deal has been struck with Facebook.
Shadesong's take on the thing (Shira Lipkin, writer).
Another LJFriend's public post on the subject.
This public post from alexmc says it how I would if I had the spoons.

Whatever happens I am likely here to stay because of my permanent account (secret gift - I still do not know who to thank). I will, however, remove/ban anyone that I find crossposting (or linking to by crossposting a comment) anything I lock. I have pingbacks turned on for now (lets see if it gets all spammy like last time they tried this) and so will, in theory, be notified if anyone links to any of my LJ posts (although I have heard that it may only work if someone links to my posts form LJ). Yes, I have nothing much to hide. Therefore when I *do* want to hide something, I hope that we are all considerate enough to respect each others' boundaries.

P.S. If anyone is serious about leaving LJ for Dreamwidth (or elsewhere), I will miss you as I do not read my DW very often, but I do have an account there and have some invite codes if anyone wants one.

I wonder if it means anything that I initially typed "shint" in the title/subject line for this entry?

I agree with you on this. It's just wrong to repeat or share someone else's posts.

I had my posts locked and then two years later had an ex-friend (who turned out not to be a friend at all) copy and repeat one of my most intimate posts in a drama/snark community. I got the most glorious hate mail. So you're right: anything you put on the Internet is fair game, even if you think you've locked it down. I hate that we can't be free with our thoughts.
